Diagnosis
Early detection of disability in early childhood is a key determinant of a child’s future quality of life and has a direct impact on their development potential. 1.58% of children under 5 in Morocco and 3.3% in Tunisia live with a disability.
In this context, national policies and the dissemination of good practice relating to disability to health professionals⸱les have been put in place. However, both countries note a common difficulty in carrying out early screening of children’s disorders.
Project
In response to this problem, Santé Sud and its partners in Morocco and Tunisia are setting up a new project focusing on the early detection and management of disability in children under the age of 5:
- Training early childhood professionals in the early identification of disabilities and developmental disorders
- Raising awareness of this issue among parents
- Supporting establishments that provide care for young children with disabilities
- Strengthening civil society organisations and networking them with the supervisory authorities to ensure that early detection of disability is better integrated into public policies in Morocco and Tunisia.
