Diagnosis

In Madagascar, almost one in two children under the age of five suffers from stunted growth (height/age ratio) and 42% of children under the age of five are underweight (weight/age ratio). This is chronic malnutrition.

Stunting is the result of a cumulative process that begins during pregnancy and continues into early childhood. Repeated bouts of illness such as diarrhoea, malaria or acute respiratory infections, combined with inadequate nutrition, affect a child’s growth.

The underlying causes of stunted growth are multifactorial: lack of access to healthcare, the eating habits of mother and child, food safety, water quality and hygiene.

Project

Santé Sud is working to strengthen the skills of midwives in the prevention, screening and management of malnutrition. Awareness-raising activities are carried out in communities to reinforce knowledge and good practice in terms of nutrition and care.

Santé Sud trains public and community players in the issues surrounding malnutrition and supports them in setting up multi-sectoral consultation frameworks on the subject.

In particular, community educational gardens have been set up to encourage dietary diversification.
