Diagnosis

In Madagascar, inequalities between women and men persist, particularly in the exercise of the right to health. There are also inequalities in access to healthcare between urban and rural areas, where women suffer several forms of discrimination and where more than 80% of the population live (INSTAT 2021).

The availability of family planning services and basic obstetric care is particularly low, resulting in a low rate of use of contraceptive methods and high indicators of maternal and infant mortality.

The country’s epidemiological profile is also marked by transmissible infectious diseases such as tuberculosis, HIV-AIDS and malaria.

Lastly, 25% of cancers seen in Madagascar’s oncology department are cervical cancers, although half as many women in rural areas have heard of this disease as in urban areas (INSTAT 2021).

Projet

In response to this context, the project will support the installation and training of 23 midwives in rural areas in Analamanga and Diana. The aim is to offer a person-centred and gender-sensitive local service, integrating :

  • Sexual and reproductive health and rights, including reproductive health for adolescents and young people and the fight against gender-based violence.
  • The fight against HIV-AIDS, tuberculosis, malaria and cervical cancer.

These facilities will be located in areas where people are forced to travel miles to gain access to a qualified health professional.
