Diagnosis

In Morocco and Tunisia, violence against women (sexual violence, domestic violence, genital mutilation, early marriage and gynaeco-obstetric violence) is still common and difficult for health systems to deal with. In Morocco, 63% of women suffer at least one act of violence in their lifetime, half of them within the family circle. In Tunisia, the figure is 48%.

Survivors of gender-based violence (GBV) have very little access to information on sexual and reproductive rights, and therefore lack access to safe, high-quality care. This is largely due to the social environment in which they live, which is marked by gender norms and stereotypes, and which the local feminist organisations we work with are fighting against.

Project

The primary mission of this project is to raise awareness of sexual and reproductive health issues and to strengthen the provision of healthcare. The programme aims to

  • Raise awareness of GBV and the culture of gender equality in communities (both men and women), particularly among young people and adolescents, through the creation of a number of innovative tools.
  • Improving the quality of sexual and reproductive health care for survivors of GBV.
  • Train medical and social professionals and teachers to identify, care for and refer survivors of GBV.
  • Strengthen the capacities of CSOs and key players in the ecosystem of the fight against GBV in order to increase their actions, their impact on populations and their power to influence public authorities.

More specifically, here are the key impact figures for 2024 in Morocco:

  • Organisation of awareness-raising sessions in schools in the form of theatre-forum plays on the issues of stereotypes and gender equality.
  • 310 GBV survivors benefited from a care fund.
  • 13 CSOs strengthened on GBV, SRH and first aid.
  • 20% increase in the capacity of CSOs, counselling centres and women’s shelters to provide initial counselling, referrals and guidance to GBV survivors.
  • 7,000 people made aware of SRHR, the culture of gender equality and GBV.
  • 1,275 women and children victims of gender-based violence cared for by listening centres.
  • 66 directors of women’s shelters trained in GBV, SRH, first aid and psychosocial support.

And the key impact figures for 2024 in Tunisia:

  • 134 people welcomed individually at the pharmacy.
  • 4 training modules developed for midwives at Tunis University Hospital and Kasserine Regional Hospital.
  • 93 healthcare professionals trained in humanising care.
  • 43 ONET leaders trained in the SRHR.
  • 616 young people educated.
  • 30 people monitored by the legal clinic.
